Starting with his debut “Családi tüzfészek / Family Nest” (1979), the recurring themes of nullity, existence and extinction in Béla Tarr’s tens of masterpieces including “Kárhozat / Damnation” (1988), “Sátántangó” (1994) -a seven and half long film with many real-time scenes- “Werckmeister harmóniák / Werckmeister Harmonies” (2000), “A londoni férfi / The Man from London” (2007) and his farewell work to filmmaking “A torinoi lo / The Turin Horse” (2011) mark him a legend of cinema. With his prolonged collaboration with the screenwriter László Krasznahorkai, the composer Mihaly Vig, the admired actors such as Erika Bók, János Derzsi and also the frequent co-direction of his wife, Ágnes Hranitzky, Tarr’s each work has been critically accepted as masterpiece and many contemporary independent artists, including Gus Van Sant and Jim Jarmusch, have been widely influenced not only by his films, but his standpoint as well.
